After Everything Else Went Warm
Why gel pillows, “cooling” sheets and fans quit on you by 3am during menopause, and what finally feels cool when you need it most.
7-minute read
If there’s a dry shirt folded on your nightstand, this is for you.
If there’s a towel on your side of the bed, a fan aimed at your face, and a husband who’s learned not to touch you after midnight, this is for you too.
You’re not a “hot sleeper.” Something wakes you. Usually around 3am. Heat floods your chest and neck, your pajamas are damp, and by the time you’ve changed in the dark and flipped your pillow to the cool side, you’re wide awake. You know exactly how the next two hours go.
The 3am check
Tap every one that’s true for you.
Two or more? Keep reading. You’re describing night sweats, not a warm bedroom, and that difference is exactly why the usual fixes let you down.
You’re far from the only one. This is how women describe it in public menopause support forums:
“I am in [perimenopause] and the night sweats are unbearable.”
HealthUnlocked · Menopause & Perimenopause Support
“I wake up and change PJs few times in the night.”
HealthUnlocked · Menopause & Perimenopause Support
“My poor husband is frozen with me running a fan and no blankets.”
HealthUnlocked · Menopause & Perimenopause Support
“…waking up in the morning drenched down front and back.”
HealthUnlocked · Menopause & Perimenopause Support
And it’s common. In a 2024 American Academy of Sleep Medicine survey, only 6% of women aged 45 to 64 said their sleep hadn’t changed during menopause.
You’re not imagining how bad it is

Too many women get told “that’s just menopause.” The doctors who specialize in it know better. Here’s the director of Mayo Clinic Women’s Health:
Why everything you tried went warm
Ask women in those forums what they’ve tried and you get the same shopping list: gel pillows, cooling bedding, fans, water-cooled pads, supplements. And the same verdicts.
-
Gel “cooling” pillow
Goes warmWhy: gel only feels cold because it starts out cooler than you. It soaks up your heat until it matches you, and the foam underneath holds that heat against your skin. By 2am you’re lying on a warm slab.
-
Cooling or wool bedding
Still sweaty“…it’s helped but I’m still a sweaty Betty.”HealthUnlocked
Why: breathable bedding helps a little. But it only touches the side you’re lying on, and breathing isn’t the same as pulling heat out of your skin.
-
Fans
Up at 3am“I used to have to get up and fan myself in the bathroom.”HealthUnlocked
Why: a fan cools the air after you’re already hot, and it freezes whoever’s sleeping next to you.
-
Water-cooled mattress pads
Loud & priceyWhy: they can get really cold, but they come with a motor, water tanks, an app and a price tag in the hundreds or thousands.
-
Menopause supplements
Nothing worked“I’ve tried the sage, red clover, black cohosh and nothing worked for me! I’ve had the hot flushes and night sweats for around 9 years.”HealthUnlocked
Why: some women find relief. Many don’t, even after months, and none of them change what you’re lying on at 3am.
Notice the pattern. Almost everything works after the fact. The towel dries sweat that already woke you. The fan cools the room after the heat hits. The gel pillow was warm by 2am.
You didn’t shop badly. Most of these were made for “hot sleepers,” people whose bedroom is too warm. Your heat comes from the inside, in waves, several times a night. That’s a different problem, and it needs a different kind of help.
Your thermostat didn’t break. It got touchy.
Here’s what’s going on, in plain English.
Before menopause, your body shrugged off small changes in temperature. As estrogen drops, that comfort window narrows. Mayo Clinic puts it simply: “Body temperature that goes up a little can cause hot flashes.”
A rise too small to notice sets off the whole response. Blood rushes to your skin, heat spreads across your chest, neck and face, and you sweat to get rid of it. Then the sweat cools on your skin, your body overshoots, and you’re shivering under the covers you just kicked off.
-
1
Your core temperature ticks up, too little to feel.
-
2
Your body overreacts. Heat floods your chest, neck and face.
-
3
You sweat to get rid of it, and it wakes you.
-
4
The sweat chills you. Now you’re cold, and wide awake.
↻ Then it starts again.
And this isn’t a few rough months. The SWAN study followed 1,449 women and found that hot flashes and night sweats lasted a median of 7.4 years, and 11.8 years for women whose symptoms started before their last period.
On HRT and still waking up?
Hormone therapy helps a lot of women sleep better. In Dr. Faubion’s words, it “does help improve sleep.” But it doesn’t work for everyone. One woman, asked if she’d tried it:
“Did try one type 2 years ago but it didn’t work. And I didn’t go back.”

Nothing here replaces your doctor. This is about the part that’s left over: getting through the night you’re actually in.
Cool the moment you touch it. Cool again every time you move.
Thriverest was built around one moment: the second a hot flash wakes you. Here’s what’s waiting for you when it does.
-
Lab-tested cool, the second your skin touches it
The cover is ice silk, a smooth, silky knit that pulls heat away from your skin on contact. An accredited lab measured how fast it does that, a number called Q-Max, at 0.43. The testing standard calls 0.15 “cool to the touch,” so this fabric scores nearly three times the bar.
We compared cooling fabrics from three manufacturers, including a phase-change (PCM) fabric that scored 0.41. This ice silk came out on top.

-
It doesn’t turn into a warm slab
Gel is made to soak up heat, so once it’s full of yours, it stays warm. Ice silk doesn’t store your heat. It’s thin and breathable, so heat moves away from you instead of being held against your skin.
And it cools on contact, before the sweat. Wicking fabrics only start working after you’re already damp.

-
The whole U is cool fabric
Every inch of the pillow is covered in ice silk: 140 × 70 cm (55 × 27½ in) of cool fabric that runs along your chest and belly, between your knees and behind your back. That’s far more of you resting on something cool than any regular pillow could ever reach.
So whenever you shift or roll over, at midnight, at 3am, at 5am, you land on fresh, cool fabric. No flipping pillows. No hunting for the cold side of the sheet.
Left: a regular pillow touches your head. Right: the U puts cool fabric against your chest, belly, hips and between your knees.
No motor, no water, no app. Nothing to plug in or refill at 3am. You just hold it.

Q-Max measures how fast a fabric pulls heat from your skin on contact. The higher the number, the cooler it feels. Ours is 0.43.
Meet Thriverest

Thriverest is a U-shaped cooling body pillow covered in ice silk from end to end, plus a matching cooling pillowcase for your regular pillow, so your face and neck rest on cool fabric too. It’s made for one moment: when a hot flash wakes you and you want to get back to sleep without getting out of bed.
Isn’t this just a pregnancy pillow? The shape is the same family, and that’s the point. A U-shaped pillow was built to hold a side-sleeping body from chest to knees. We kept the shape and built everything else for 3am in menopause.
Before you order: what women ask
Will it take over the bed? What about my husband?
It’s generous: 140 × 70 cm (55 × 27½ in), and it sits on your side of a queen or king. Think about what it replaces: the fan on high, the blankets you throw onto him, the 3am shirt change. It might be the first thing in months that gets him his blanket back.
Will it go flat?
It holds about 3 kg (6.6 lb) of fill, so it’s full and supportive from the very first night. And you have 90 nights in your own bed to be sure.

I sleep on my back. Will it work for me?
It’s made for side sleepers, which is how most people sleep. If you’re on your back, tuck one arm of the U along your side so you always have cool fabric to rest against.
Is it safe for sensitive skin?
Yes. The fabric is OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified, which means it’s been tested for harmful substances.
Is $229 a lot for a pillow?
Next to a $40 body pillow, yes. But you’re not comparing it to a $40 pillow. You’re comparing it to everything else women buy to get through the night:
-
Water-cooled mattress system$500–$2,000+
Plus water tanks, a motor and an app.
-
Bed-cooling fan systemHundreds
Cools the air, not you. And it’s loud.
-
Menopause supplements$15–$40 / month
Every month, whether they work or not.
